A plaque honoring Claude A. Thompson of Willmar was dedicated to Thompson Park, formerly known as the Foot Lake Rest Area on Ella Avenue, in October of 1972. Thompson was a District Highway Engineer for the Minnesota Department of Highways in Willmar from 1945-1965 and a charter member of the Minnesota Society of Profession Engineers. Part of the inscription on the plaque reads, “This scenic view and park area is herewith dedicated to the memory of Claude A. Thompson, P.E., whose foresight and leadership resulted in the preservation and development of this park area and Veterans Memorial Drive.”
Today, families can go on a lovely bicycle ride down the Glacial Lakes State Trail to Thompson Park. The park provides a beautiful picnic area and some fire pits for the public to utilize.
